THUNDERSTORMS DON'T NEED TO BE SCARY

#1 Rule: No coddling

Our instinct to parent and nurture can take over and we end up telling a frightened dog, "it's okay". In dog language you're telling them their fear is justified.

Make it interactive

It's not time to be afraid, it's time to play or chew on a nice healthy treat. Chewing releases endorphins that help calm. Playing their favorite game can help too. Not outside obviously. Chuck It makes a fantastic line of indoor soft toys.

Drain energy prior to the storm. A tired dog won't worry about the noise as much.

Thunder jackets can help too, they should be put on before the storm or fireworks.

Do not stress. They will feel your stress.

Don't let them run and hide. Grab a 15ft lead for them to keep them from darting.

Use a leash if u need to to keep them around so the can see you are not worried about the storm.

Use obedience as another option.

Focusing on come sit and playtime.

Every dog is different you may need to try a few different tactics to keep their attention.

Lavender is a great calming oil as well. It can be diffused to relax everyone in the room.

Great advice!! One of my 3 dogs is afraid of storms. She runs around barking like it's going to make the noise go away!! I will definitely be trying the leash to stop her running and frantic behavior and redirect her with obedience and play.
Thank you!!!!
